Our History

Desert Spring, located near the University of Arizona has been nurturing young minds since August 1987.  The school was founded by Sara VanSlyke and Jan Kincaid. Although Jan passed away in 2001, Sara led the school with dedication until her retirement as director in 2021, continuing the legacy they built together. Today, Hypatia Luna directs the school, bringing passion and fresh ideas.

As a non-profit, Desert Spring serves approximately 60 children, ages 2 to 5, offering high-quality, accessible early education for all families.  Guided by the Reggio Emilia approach, the curriculum evolves from the interests and inquiries of the children. The child-centered classrooms foster curiosity and creativity, with teachers acting as partners in learning. Exploration is further encouraged through hands-on projects that utilize a wide range of materials and media.

The educators at Desert Spring are committed to ongoing professional growth, studying the Reggio approach and participating in workshops, college courses, and professional development. The school has a four star rating through Quality First.
