For many children, the Rainbow Room is their first experience away from home and their primary caregivers. Parents are often nervous and unsure about what to expect, both for their child and for themselves. The Rainbow Room educators offer a lot of support to families during the transition from home to school. Children often adapt quickly as they are developmentally ready to explore new spaces and people. Their active bodies and busy minds are ready for risk taking, big body movements, and messy exploration. Rainbow Room teachers balance love and affection – in the form of snuggles and one-on-one play – with setting age appropriate boundaries and encouraging independence. Over the course of a year in Rainbow Room, a child will be introduced to
- words and phrases that teach them to advocate for themselves and others
- transition songs, such as “tucking away” and “follow me inside”
- washing hands
- family style meals with conversation amongst friends
- and so much more!
